Welcome

Hi there! And thank you for taking the time to peek at the Visual Hues Photography blog! Seeing the images so big on the screen just makes me smile from ear to ear – hope you like them too!

I’m Janet and I’m a portrait photographer based in Calgary, Alberta. I truly believe I am one of the luckiest people out there having the job I do. I meet the most wonderful people, share the special moments in their lives and get to see their families grow and expand. And to top it off I am rewarded with their smiles, tears and compliments when they see the beautiful art we’ve created featuring THEM. So fun!

Have fun touring around. My website link is at the top of the blog where you can see more images and lots of helpful information. You can use the archives tab to find blog posts from previous months. And there is a link to our website where you can find out lots more information. I look forward to meeting you and the precious ones in your life … whether they are brand new, just growing up, around for a while, or not even arrived yet!

Thank you for letting me do what I love. Hope to hear from you soon!

WINTER BLISS – Calgary Family Photography

Here are a few pictures to remind us that winter isn’t so bad!!!    Mind you, it wasn’t minus 20 degrees Celsius on this day like it is right now!!   It was an absolutely glorious day for this family of Californians that came up to visit their family for the holidays.  Despite a pretty extreme change in temperature for them, they got right into the sledding and snow antics that comes with a Calgary winter.

THEY MADE ME WORK FOR IT!! – Calgary Newborn Twin Photographer

Twins are such a treasure to photograph.  I love seeing how similar and how different they are both in their character and their look.  It amazes me how they may be a bit unhappy but then you lay them beside their sibling and they just relax, knowing they are once again right by their best friend.  There are however lots of challenges with photographing twins… they just may not want to cooperate at the same time!     And ooooh these two little ones definitely made me work!!  Good for them, I say!   In the end, I love what we captured.  (One of my favourites is mom giving the most loving, reassuring smile to her new little baby girl.)

Based on my time with this family and the images I have a couple predictions

(1) a laid back little boy.  Look at two of them in their blankets on the grass bowl.  He’s in the darker blanket — arm behind his head just laying back and being cool

(2) a  mischievous little girl.   Look at the second last image … she’s wide awake thinking up some devious plan to get her sleeping brother — she’s even got her finger to help her think better!!

Enjoy looking at these sweeties!!

YES, OUTDOOR NEWBORN SHOOT IN DECEMBER! – Calgary Newborn Photography

There are not too many newborn shoots that can be done outside in the middle of December where I live!    Luckily we get these warm winds called chinooks blowing through every few weeks which allow us to leave our jackets inside and step outside even when there is lots of snow on the ground.   On top of that, Longview (one of my favourite places to shoot) is usually two, three or four degrees warmer than Calgary!!   Combine that with beautiful light and a gorgeous family and we were rocking and rolling!!    I really should have just included all the images from the shoot as we had such fun, but here’s quite a few for you to enjoy…

CALGARY NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER

It’s always an honour to be invited back to a family’s home to take photos of their newest arrivals.   I first met this family when their first little one was born and now they get to celebrate the arrival of a gorgeous little sister.   She gave me quite a few sweet little smiles — I think she may end up having as sweet of a smile as her older sister!

CALGARY NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY

I walked into this family’s home and made my way over, while saying hi to two very cute dogs, to the bundle I saw her mom holding.   And looking at back at me were these two gorgeous eyes… with a perfect little nose!   Oh my goodness… I’m so happy we were able to get some images of her awake as content as can be as she is such a treasure with those eyes!!

LONGVIEW NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY

The beauty of southern Alberta and the beautiful families that ranch this land all wrapped up into one!   Many more to come from this shoot down past Longview, but I couldn’t resist giving this glimpse into what we captured that gorgeous chinook day….

CALGARY BABY PHOTOGRAPHY

I’m so excited to introduce this beautiful family.  I was lucky enough to visit them twice as Magnus wasn’t feeling himself  the first day.  To make him happier the first day we gave him a bath and not only were we rewarded with a happier baby, we were rewarded with a gorgeous collection of images with bubbles and rubber duckies.   At my next visit Magnus gave me lots of smiles.  So in the end we got a wonderful array of pictures… hope they make you smile!!!

CALGARY CHILDREN PHOTOGRAPHY

I can only smile when I see this first image of these three sweethearts.  This was one of the calm moments in our shoot.  And to think I consider my household to be on the busy side!!!!   Here’s a home with a very busy two and a half year old and 10 month old twins.  I wanted to include the last photo in this series as I think of the time needed to wash the bottles, let alone feed, care for and love the little ones you can see in the background.

And if you read my blog on a regular basis, you know I can never resist sharing photos of kids with their grandparents!!   I melt when I see this series of photos … he was so, so, so in love with his grandkids and I hope it’s reflected in these images.

SISTERS – Calgary Child Photography

This is the second winter I’ve been able to photograph these gorgeous girls.  It’s very hard not to love each of their personalities… they each have their own spark!   It’s pretty hard to believe this was a  November day in Calgary, but we were able to have an absolutely beautiful afternoon outside.

NEW BABY BOY! – Calgary Newborn Photography

It’s hard to believe I haven’t blogged for a week considering how wonderfully crazy this season has been!  I took a 3 day break to celebrate my husband’s 40th birthday party, going up to Lake Louise and having a most glorious time!  It was a winter wonderland up there and was such a good reminder to both of us that we need to take breaks for ourselves to refresh and rejuvenate!  I’ll post some of those pictures in a bit, but first I have to get back to showing images of the sweet families I have taken photos of lately.

Thank you so much to this family for their patience in seeing their photos.  They first saw the canvases of the babies up in the Foothills Hospital and gave me a call right away to book a session.  ooooh, what a sweet sweet baby boy you have!!!   He was just sleeping away the whole time I got to visit with this family.  I hope I can take lots of pictures with big brothers next time!!!
