I’m Janet and I’m a portrait photographer based in Calgary, Alberta. I truly believe I am one of the luckiest people out there having the job I do. I meet the most wonderful people, share the special moments in their lives and get to see their families grow and expand. And to top it off I am rewarded with their smiles, tears and compliments when they see the beautiful art we’ve created featuring THEM. So fun!

A few weeks ago, there was a post with an extended family shoot in dreamy evening light. Well we went back, this time with morning light! This time it was for the other side of the family, who also happen to be my cousins! Cousins that I don’t see as often as I would like… but it was lots of fun to catch up with everyone again. It was a birthday present for Mom and Grandma… hope you love them, Lynn!
This family is going through lots of changes right now. All three kids have flown the nest and are settling down in different parts of Canada. Their parents spend their time living in the States and here. And when I asked them when they had their last family photo shoot, the youngest said they were around five years old!!!! That’ been 12 long. long years and I am so happy they contacted me for a photo shoot together. There were lots of jokes, poking fun and laughter. I love the shot of father and son — they were feeling a bit goofy ‘posing’ for their picture together and I love the result.
And as timing would have it, the sisters met me at the Marda Gras Street Festival last year. That festival is happening again this weekend on Sunday August 8th on 33rd Avenue in Marda Loop. Come see our booth!! Visual Hues Photography will be in the KIDS QUARTER area and I’m pretty sure we’ll have a fun contest going on!!!
It was a very very blah day out weather-wise, completely gray and overcast when I made my way over to my morning shoot this day. As soon as this client opened the doors to their home, my day brightened up. oooh, those baby blue eyes that greeted me! This 12 week old just made my heart melt the first moment I saw him — and for many moments afterwards. I mean, just look at his beautiful blue eyes!! He is such a gorgeous little guy … not surprising in the slightest considering his mom and dad are pretty darn beautiful themselves. I love his blue eyes, but a lot of these images were calling out for black and white. Thank you for such a lovely morning!
Big Blues – His eyes are beautiful and you certainly captured them beautifully in the photos…….the baby eyes seem to be your focus. The pictures are natural looking just as they should be…great job!

Here is the first image from a new project I am working on. I’ve decided to document the progress of the studio transformation. This is such a big step in our lives we thought it deserved some special attention. We think it will be fun to have a series of pictures to look at later to show us how our vision developed from beginning to end.
As it is a 1911 home and Hailey is wearing a vintage-style dress, I wanted to edit this image with the same sort of feel. I’d be very interested in knowing your thoughts about how you think it turned out as I usually don’t put textures into my work, but I am super pleased with how this turned into what I was imagining it would.
Hailey is in one of the new set of dresses I have purchased specifically for Visual Hues Photography shoots. I have a series of them with the intention of ordering more so let me know if you are interested in these adorable handmade dresses. I have a variety of colours, styles and sizes and I know I won’t be able to keep away from them!!

Janet I love the feel of the ‘old’ in the studio!! You should keep one section ‘rough’ for the vintage style photos that people request! Fantastic photo, fantastic dress, fantastic idea to keep track of your progress!!
I soooo loved this family. An amazing level of comfort right from the moment they first called and when I stepped through their door. Dad told me he took pictures of the Visual Hues canvases up in the Foothills hospital with his phone so he could call me when they got home! Love it!
For this shoot, I wanted to highlight an idea for a wall collection, because I just love this combination of images so much. I love the long and narrow feature piece and then all the sweet images of this beautiful brand new little girl. Would this just not look soooo striking up in their home?!?
Thought I would take an itsy bitsy teeny weeny bit of time to work on a couple photos of my own little sweeties!
ooo, R is starting to look a lot like a mini H! Adorable.
When I first saw these three little ones pop out of their vehicle one by one, I knew we were going to have a magical shoot! The whole family was full of big smiles, lots of giggles and a sense of style that I just loved. The best thing… the kids are just as fun and free-spirited as they are gorgeous.
It’s a big post, I know, but it’s all I could do to narrow it down to these ones!! I’m sure I’ll look back at their gallery tomorrow and wish I would have put some other favourites in!!!

I was so excited to take photos of this beautiful family. These littles ones’ drop dead gorgeous mom and I both did work with our children’s preschool board. Through meeting there we organized our shoot — it’s great to meet so many wonderful and fun families through the activities of our children.
I am in complete love with the first image here. It’s an example of those images where your children don’t have to have a huge smile on their faces to be as precious as can be. The first family one just shouts “FUN” to me and the second kiss in the park makes me sigh with happiness. We finished the day off with ice cream — what a perfect way to end it!!!

I took photos of Big Brother a couple years ago and was so happy to see this sweet family again. For big brother’s photos, we hardly got any of him sleeping… with this little guy we hardly got any of him awake!!
This little one is just sweetness through and through! She is one of those babies you just want to go up to and say…. oooooooooh my goodness, you are such a cutie!!! I think I did that about thirty times during our shoot!!
I played around a little bit with the last image of sweet baby with her daddy.. having some fun with textures… let me know what you think!!
